Students Seek Broader Focus In Real Estate Management Practice, Adoption Of Proptech
Students of Estate of Estate Management in tertiary institutions in Lagos State have urged Estate Surveyors and Valuers to also give recognitions to other aspects of Estate Management as given to Valuation in order to ensure a robust engagement in other aspects of real estate practice.
They also sought immediate adoption of proptech in real estate practice and a shift from traditional practice.
The students gave their views during the maiden edition of Hope Harriman Students Series (HHSS) organized by Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers, Lagos State Branch. The event was held at the Alumni Hall, Yaba College of Technology, Yaba, Lagos State and was attended by lecturers and students all Estate Management offering tertiary institutions in Lagos State, as well as seasoned estate surveyors and valuers from NIESV, Lagos Branch. The students were engaged in a discussion on the practice of real estate in Nigeria.
A student from YABATECH, Ebuka opined that there’s so much in real estate now, but there is over-emphasis on valuation, while the other two panelists from UNILAG and LASUTECH had a different opinion.
From University of Lagos, Munachi called for urgent adoption of Proptech in real estate practice against the traditional approach, using the old measuring tape as an example.
However, Ikhareba from LASUSTECH crave for problem solving competition to be initiated by NIESV for the Estate Management and Valuation departments in tertiary institutions as done in an allied department (Architecture)
Among the student audience, some gave their rich field experience during their Industrial Training progammes.
Towards the end of this first session, the student panelists were given an opportunity to pass a message to the leadership of the Institution (NIESV). They pleaded with the leadership of NIESV to look into the fee for the upcoming National Conference, to make more affordable for student participation. The students also sought an increment in the allowance of I.T students and urged NIESV to provide research grants to students.
Earlier, the Chairman of NIESV Lagos State Branch, ESV (Mrs) Olabisi Demola-Alade FNIVS said that the maiden edition of HHSS was expected to bridge the gap of communication and awareness between NIESV and students of Estate Management and Valuation in the tertiary institutions.
Chairman of Education Subcommittee, ESV Ayodeji Odeleye ANIVS noted that improvement of academic curriculum in the tertiary institutions offering Estate Management and Valuation has become inevitable as could be seen from opinions shared by the students at the event.
The discussion sessions were facilitated by ESV Olusanjo Fawole FNIVS and ESV Nnennaya Awoyokun ANIVS.
